Organizing your closet is not just for women! Men need a Piece of Time Peace of Mind session too! Men need help with their closets! Here are a few things to ponder when determining if your closet needs organizing.
Styles updated ? (acid wash denim was a fad not a enduring style)
Wearable? (meaning size 32 fits you right now, not later )
Current? (Used to cycle? Sold bike but why do you still have biker shorts in your closet?)
Surprisingly men hang onto their clothing more than women, why? Men do not have to update their wardrobe as often as women, a khaki pant stays in fashion for men longer than women. As you can see this closet need a little TLC . Clothes were no longer classified and areas were blurred with clothing clutter.
Top Excuses when cleaning out a closet:
I might wear it someday!
I have sentimental memoriesIt might come back in 10 years!
My _____ gave me it!
Excuses! Excuses!Excuses!
Here’s my response to those top excuses:
10 years is way too long to wait for a style to return
It’s the thought that counts not the item
If your not wearing it this year it needs to go!
Memories live in your mind not your closet + there has got to be a photo of you somewhere in that top!
I was able to work thru those excuses with my client. He tried on all items that were questionable, we checked for tears and stains and we made the commitment on only keeping items that looked GREATon him.
Why bins?
- stay nicely folded
- away from any moths
- utilize the the upper space quite well.
I think he did an amazing job! What do you think?

Nice! Shelley what are your suggestions to how often a family should purge?
Hi Elva!
I believe to really keep on top of clutter, purging should happen every 3 months. I encourage my clients to take smaller areas and organize bit by bit. For example your kitchen drawers are cluttered instead of doing all drawers at once, do 1 drawer a week.
A great technique I find helpful is learning the give to get approach. If I buy an item I immediately look for an item I can let go of. It really helps with a build up of “stuff” we all experience.
